We provide services to many Internet companies

Verizon is one of the main us telecoms operators. Its joint venture with Vodafone, Verizon Wireless, is leader in the mobile market in the country with over 90 million subscribers. It may be the first operator in the world to deploy large scale mobile fourth generation, or LTE network. Responsible for the networks of Verizon for Europe operations, Christopher Kimm speaks very broadband revolution.

ATT, which distributes exclusive iPhone in the United States, had to cope with peaks in consumption saturating its mobile network. Do you see in Verizon Wireless an explosion of mobile Internet traffic

Yes, the consumption of bandwidth and data traffic are growing. We do not have the iPhone, but we have widely deployed our telephony 3 G infrastructure. Manage network capabilities is an obsession with us, and we invest continuously. We have spent more than 10 billion dollars to acquire with the US regulator, the FCC. These frequencies from analogue television in the 700 megahertz band to pass through walls and buildings easily. We are currently testing the mobile standard of fourth generation, or LTE, with Orange, China Mobile and Vodafone in several cities in the United States and Europe. We are going out this technology of the R & D labs to the market in 30 American cities at year end.

That will change with the technology very high-speed LTE

We will still improve our coverage and provide a more powerful signal to our subscribers, with result in more reliable communications. The flow will pass to 5 megabits per second (Mbps) to emission and 7 Mbps to the reception. It is a conservative estimate, because we observed peaks higher than 15 Mbps in our testing. When the bandwidth is growing dramatically, this creates huge new needs and new applications emerge. We have observed in the fixed telecommunications since the launch of our supply of fiber to the Subscriber. More than 3.4 million of our 9 million customers broadband subscribe to this service named "Yarn" and accessing the Internet at 50 Mbps in receipt, 35 Mbps in emission.

What will be carrying very high-speed Internet applications

With very high flow, video over IP explodes. Most of our yarn subscribers Crave TV high definition. They are buying HD cameras, make their own films. The video-sharing will become as common as photo sharing. We believe as much in videoconferencing, in particular to the Telepresence to spatialize the sound and image, and truly communicate in real time. It's a bit like when you enter a movie theatre: you forget a few moments later where you are and you get carried away by the film. Recently, Cisco announced the commercialization of its system of telepresence to the public while it was previously reserved for companies. In addition, LG and Panasonic showed at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas for flat television screens carrying a camera and Skype videophone services. We are the beginning. Even telework will finally grow, as people will no longer fear to be visually from their manager.

The explosion of data traffic causes of such tensions on the network that some demand the end of the neutrality of the Internet so an operator can serve some customers priority.

On neutrality, we explained our point of view together with Google, in a contribution sent to the Federal Communications Commission last week. The central principle for us, it is the choice to consumers. Each must be able to connect to others on the Internet without limitations imposed by the Government or by an access provider. It should not be that certain users are excluded. It is the system which will provide the maximum flexibility to innovate.

When Internet traffic explode, it related advertising to Google, but operators like you must fund a more powerful telecoms infrastructure. Does involve the Internet companies

We are convinced that the market is the best tool to resolve such issues. We provide services to many Internet companies. They buy all the bandwidth to operators. We have therefore a commercial means to resolve potential problems. This is the best way to find common ground with information providers.
